The past couple weeks I’ve been working on cleaning out my home office closet and re-organizing it. I have come across some excellent stuff while doing this. Including an envelope of stickers – mostly variously themed octocat stickers. Our 9 year old tried to claim the unicorn one – I said not a chance!
The closet turned out amazing, honestly. A 4×4 IKEA Kallax was as wide as my closet could go, with a 1×4 IKEA Kallax hung just high enough to fit my file box, and room for some of my other crafting tools. Look how pretty!
I love how it turned out, it took some iteration, but I got there in the end. There’s even a little space to grow! Iteration has been my middle name lately. There is only one part of my home office that has stayed the same through the last year – where my desk is. Everything else has changed in some manner.
Anyway, in this closet, I also have a hook where I hang all of my conference badges, it’s off to the left so you can’t really see it from the above photo. One of those badges was from the first major tech conference I ever attended in the fall of 2013, when I was starting the first iteration of my current career. I wasn’t really paying attention as I hung them back on their designated hook, but Clark was and said, “Oh, hey!”
As you can see, hanging on the bottom of the badge is a few badge ribbons. Including a couple from Intuit – our current employer. It’s crazy to think that when I attended GHC all those years ago, that I thought to myself, “I’ll never be working at Intuit, I don’t really want to work on TurboTax, but I love these ribbons!”
This job with Intuit MailChimp is the latest iteration of my career, and I’ve learned so much since that first tech conference ten years ago. There are times I’ll be in a meeting or at a conference, and think to myself, “Wow, I’m here. I did it, I made this career change work!” Then sit there in amazement.
A lot can change in 10 years, and I’m looking forward to what the next 10 years will bring.
